Guban Greater Funnel-eared Bat - 750

The Guban greater funnel-eared bat (Rhynchomeles prattorum), also called Pratt’s funnel-eared bat, was newly described in 2018. Discovered in Somaliland’s Guban region, this bat features distinctive funnel-shaped ears. Its name reflects both its discovery location and its unique ear shape.

Greater Bamboo Lemur - 500

The Greater Bamboo Lemur (Prolemur simus) is a rare and critically endangered species native to Madagascar. Notably, it is one of the largest bamboo lemurs and has a specialized diet mainly consisting of bamboo. However, its population has dramatically declined because of habitat destruction and hunting. The Grauer’s gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), also known as the eastern lowland gorilla, ranks as one of the two subspecies of the eastern gorilla, with the other being the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei). This subspecies has faced significant population declines in recent decades due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, and civil unrest in the region. Therefore, addressing these issues is crucial for conserving the Grauer’s gorilla.

The addax (Addax nasomaculatus) is a critically endangered desert antelope native to the Sahara Desert in North Africa. Hainan Gibbon - 25

The Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus) is one of the world’s rarest and critically endangered primates. This species is endemic to Hainan Island, China. Habitat destruction, fragmentation, hunting, and the illegal pet trade have drastically reduced its population. The Hainan gibbon stands out due to its unique appearance and behavior. It has black fur with white brows, creating a striking look, and is among the most vocal gibbons, using distinctive and loud calls to communicate within family groups.

The Vaquita (Phocoena sinus) is a critically endangered porpoise species found in the northern Gulf of California, Mexico. It is considered the most endangered marine mammal in the world. The vaquita’s population has been declining rapidly due to several factors, with the primary threat being accidental entanglement in fishing gear, particularly gillnets used to catch another endangered species, the totoaba fish. Totoaba swim bladders are highly valuable on the black market in some parts of Asia, leading to an increase in illegal fishing in the vaquita’s habitat.

The South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) is one of the most critically endangered tiger subspecies. Historically, the South China tiger was widespread across southern China, but due to habitat loss, poaching, and other human-related factors, its population declined dramatically throughout the 20th century.
